According to his bio, he had just gotten out of breaking up a fight between two prison inmates, which didn't go too well. This explains his beaten up police uniform and his bruise.

John Grits is seen during Sneaky Escapist in a meeting with five other officers, Jen Bruhn, Jon Sascachawean, John Farn, Johm Barley, and Captain Geoffrey Custard, currently discussing about getting more donuts when Henry Stickmin uses a Chair to enter the vents and decides to go left, then crawls through the vents and with that lands in the Police Meeting Room.
He then directs all the officers to attack Henry and fighting him before he can act.
